Kashmiri Leader Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai

FBI has arrested twelve people in connection with great kashmiri leaders Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai.

The identity of arrested people remained unknown to the media.

The FBI had issued arrest warrants for the suspicious persons on Friday. They were accused of having links with Fai.

Dr Fai was detained few days ago on the suspicion of his links with the ISI.

In occupied Kashmir, the All Parties Hurriyet Conference leader, Nayeem Ahmad Khan has expressed serious concern over the arrest of Dr Fai, the Executive Director of Kashmiri American Council, in the US, and termed it the result of strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington.

Nayeem Ahmad Khan talking to different delegations in Bhaderwah said, “New Delhi has started a new policy of defaming Kashmiris on diplomatic front as well and the arrest of Dr Fai is a result of that new policy. The arrest can’t be termed as a mere and simple police action, but it is the result of the present New Delhi-Washington strategic partnership.”

APHC leader and the Chairperson of Muslim Khawateen Markaz Jammu and Kashmir, Yasmeen Raja, condemning the arrest of Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, urged the US authorities to grant Dr Fai a fair opportunity to defend himself against the FBI-framed allegations. In her statement issued in Srinagar she said that Dr Fai and other Kashmiri leaders were peacefully and democratically projecting the Kashmir dispute at international level.

APHC leader and the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement (JKPM) Chairman, Ghulam Ahmed Mir in his statement in Jammu strongly denounced the arrest of Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai. He said that Dr Fai was an ambassador of Kashmiris abroad and his arrest was unjust. He appealed to the world community especially the human rights organisations to play role in his immediate and unconditional release.

‘WikiLeaks vindicated our stance about HR abuses in IHK’

Hurriyet leaders and civil rights groups have said that the revelations by WikiLeaks about torture of detainees in Jammu and Kashmir has vindicated their assertions about the gross human rights violations being perpetrated by Indian police and troops in the territory.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a media interview in Srinagar said that WikiLeaks had vindicated their stand about the systematic torture prevalent in the jails of occupied Kashmir.

“We have been telling the world for past 21 years about gross rights violations in the territory. This information provided by International Committee of Red Cross to the US embassy is only about the official jails, but there are hundreds of unofficial jails and underground torture cells here where civilians are subjected to third degree torture,” he added. The Mirwaiz said that it was unfortunate that the US, which portrayed itself as champion of democracy and civil rights, had maintained intentional silence over the issue.

Syed Ali Gilani in an interview said that there was nothing new in the revelations of WikiLeaks, as the Indian forces had been resorting to inhuman and brutal torture to crush the sentiments of the Kashmiri people for past over 21 years. “Thousands of civilians have been killed by Indian troops by subjecting them to torture, but world is behaving as mute spectator to the atrocities perpetrated on the people,” he said, adding that he himself was subjected to third degree torture in jails in and outside the occupied territory.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has appealed to the American President, Barack Obama to impress upon India to resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations. Mirwaiz addressing his party workers in Srinagar, said that during his visit to India, the Obama must prioritise the Kashmir dispute in his talks with the Indian leadership to ensure peace and stability in South Asia.

The Kashmir settlement-for-seat at high table idea is being discussed animatedly in the highest levels of the US administration, according to a various sources. President Obama himself has decided to revive the process of a US push in this direction, albeit discreetly, because of New Delhi's sensitivities.

Key administration officials are confirming that the UNSC issue will be on Obama's agenda when he visits New Delhi. The US President is expected to announce an incremental American support to India's candidature during his address to the joint session of India's parliament, depending on New Delhi's receptiveness to resolving the Kashmir tangle.

"[UNSC reforms] is something that is under discussion as we prepare for the President's important visit," US Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake confirmed on Monday during a read-out of the meeting between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her Indian counterpart S.M.Krishna, saying the two had agreed the "President's visit will be a defining moment in the history of our bilateral relations."

The clearest insight into Obama's thinking on the matter comes from Bob Woodward's latest book "Obama's War" in which top US policy makers are shown mulling on defusing the Kashmir situation as part of an exit strategy for US from the AfPak theater.

"Why can't we have straightforward talks with India on why a stable Pakistan is crucial?" Obama is reported as musing at one meeting. "India is moving toward a higher place in its global posture. A stable Pakistan would help." Implicit in the rumination is the idea that settling Kashmir would mollify Pakistan, where, US officials say, hardliners are using the unresolved issue as an excuse to breed an army of terrorists aimed at bleeding India.

Pro Freedom demos rock in Sringar after Eid prayers

In occupied Kashmir Eid-ul-Fitr, today, was marked with massive anti India and pro freedom protests, clashes between Indian army and demonstrators and a mammoth public gathering at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. Thousands of freedom lovers, chanting pro-freedom slogans, took out huge processions from Eidgah in Srinagar and other cities and towns of the occupied territory.

A big march in Srinagar was led by the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq who participated in a sit in at Lal Chowk. APHC leader, Yasmin Raja and other liberation leaders also joined the sit in. Hundreds of youth on motorcycles shouting, "we want freedom", "Kashmir bane ka Pakistan", Jiss Kashmir ko khoon se seencha, wo kashmir hamara hai" etc. gathered at Lal Chowk and. hoisted Pakistani and green flags a top the Clock Tower.

As the Lal Chowk rally was about to end, a mob set ablaze the buildings of Crime Branch of India, Power Development Department, Power Corporation and a police post. Enraged youth torched the barracks of Indian police in Hazratbal, a Central Reserve Police Force camp in Tral and police posts in other places. The troops resorted to aerial firing, cane charge and tear gas shelling.

Thousands of people took to the streets in Bemina, Habba Kadal, Nawab Bazar, Khanqai Muala, Zaindar Mohalla, Khanyar, Sonawar, Sopore, Baramulla, Kupwara, Handwara, Bandipore, Islamabad, Pulwama, Budgam and other towns and cities to protest against Indian state terrorism.

Addressing a gathering of hundreds of thousands of people in Eidgah, the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq vowed to continue liberation struggle till it reached its logical conclusion. He denounced the illegal detention of Syed Ali Gilani, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mian Abdul Qayoom, Aasiya Andrabi, Zaffar Akbar Butt, Ghulan Nabi Shaheen, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai and others. The Mirwaiz urged India to shun its military might policy and take positive steps for the resolution of Kashmir through tripartite talks.

India’s Independence Day in Kashmir

Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over observed the Indian Independence Day, 15 August, as Black Day to convey to the world that the people of Kashmir have yet to exercise their birth right to self-determination.

Call for the observance of the Day had been given by the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani and all other liberation leaders and groups.

The occupation authorities had made unprecedented arrangements to thwart anti-India protest demonstrations on the day, imposing curfew in several cities and towns. Police and paramilitary troops had sealed all the roads leading to the Bakhshi Stadium in Srinagar, the main venue for the official function, while sharp shooters had been deployed on the top of various buildings in different areas in the city.

In a daring deed, an Assistant Sub-Inspector of local police hurled a shoe at the puppet Chief Minister of occupied Kashmir, Omar Abdullah when he was taking salute after unfurling the Indian flag at Bakhshi Stadium in Srinagar. After hurling the shoe, the police officer raised a black flag shouting the slogan, “We want freedom". Indian troops immediately took him into custody.

On the other hand, Indian troops, in their fresh acts of state terrorism, martyred two more innocent youth one each of them in Kupwara and Rajouri areas. Two persons including a teenager were killed when Indian police fired upon protestors in Narbal and Islamabad. Protests continued in Banihal area of Ramban district.

In Muzaffarabad, the APHC-AJK staged a protest outside the Press Club against Indian state terrorism in occupied Kashmir. A memorandum was presented to the United Nations Observers’ Office on the occasion.

And in Brussels, hundreds of Kashmiris and their sympathizers staged a peaceful protest demonstration in front of the Indian Embassy to protest against the gross human rights violations by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir. Addressing the demonstrators, the Chairman of Kashmir centre Brussels, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo expressed his anguish on the continued occupation of Jammu and Kashmir and denial of Kashmiris’ right of self-determination by India.

In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Hurriyet leaders and organisations have paid rich tributes to APHC leader, Sheikh Abdul Aziz on his second martyrdom anniversary being observed, tomorrow (August 11).

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement issued in Srinagar said that lacs of Kashmiris had rendered their lives for the Kashmir cause their sacrifices would not be allowed to go waste. He reiterated the pledge to continue the liberation movement till its logical conclusion.

On the other hand, APHC leader and Chairman of Jammu Kashmir Peoples League, Sheikh Mohammad Yaqoob in a statement said that Sheikh Abdul Aziz was a committed and dedicated leader whose sacrifice had given a new dimension to the Kashmir liberation struggle.

Illegally detained APHC leader, Nayeem Ahmad Khan in his statement appealed the people not to give up the tradition of remembering their benefactors.

Meanwhile, the APHC leader, Yasmeen Raja in her statement issued in Srinagar, while paying homage to Sheikh Abdul Aziz, said that the blood of martyrs would not be allowed to go waste and Kashmiris would continue their mission till its complete success.

The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front-R, Farooq Ahmad Dar in his statement paying rich tributes to Sheikh Abdul Aziz, said that the sacred blood of Kashmiri martyrs would bring positive results and the day would come soon when the people of occupied Kashmir would get rid of Indian bondage.

It is to mention here that it was on August 11, 2008, when Indian army personnel shot dead Sheikh Abdul Aziz, while he was leading a mammoth march towards the Line of Control in the aftermath of the economic blockade against the Kashmir Valley by the Hindu fanatic groups of Jammu.

In occupied Kashmir, the authorities have arrested 41 persons including Hurriyet leaders and young freedom lovers under the black law, Public Safety Act (PSA) while 638 youth have been detained under different fake charges during a period of one month in the Kashmir Valley.

An official working in the police headquarters in Srinagar told mediamen that 23 persons including Respected Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, High Court Bar Association President, Mian Abdul Qayoom and General Secretary, Ghulam Nabi Shaheen have been booked under PSA. “The figure comprises people detained under PSA in various jails and district headquarters,” he said.

Though police officials in Srinagar didn’t reveal the exact number of people detained under the PSA, sources told newsmen that apart from Hurriyet leaders, three young boys hailing from Safakadal and one each from Gojwara and Nowhatta localities of Srinagar had been detained under the Act.

A police official said that 18 arrest warrants under the PSA had been issued in Pulwama district. “A youth has been detained and booked under PSA while 17 others against whom arrest warrants have been issued have fled from their houses. We have launched a manhunt to track them,” he added.

In Islamabad district, three persons have been arrested and booked under the black law. Many people, mostly youth have also been arrested under the PSA in Baramulla and Sopore towns.

Pertinently Kashmir Valley has been on boil after the killing of 17 year- ld Tufail Matoo in police action in Srinagar on June 11. Since then 16 more persons including a 25-year-old woman have died in the firing of police and CRPF personnel on peaceful protesters across the Valley.

In occupied Kashmir dozens of freedom lovers were injured in Srinagar when Indian policemen and paramilitary troops resorted to brute force to disperse demonstrators, who were protesting peacefully against the blasphemous sketches of Islamic religious places on undergarments.

People took to the streets at Nowhatta and the adjoining localities including Rajouri Kadal, Gojwara and Hawal and staged demonstrations. They were shouting ‘We want Freedom’ and slogans against India.

The police stopped the demonstrators at Khayam Chowk when they tried to march towards Lal Chowk. The police fired several shots in the air, burst smoke shells and resorted to baton charge, triggering clashes between protesters and the police. Later, the clashes spread to Nowpora, Khayam, Rainawari, Dalgate, Maisuma and Koker Bazar areas. At least thirty persons were injured in the police action.

Kashmiris observe Indian Republic Day as Black Day

Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world observed Indian Republic Day, today, as Black Day, call for which was given by the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani. Observance of the day was aimed at conveying the international community that India’s continued denial of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination was contrary to its claim of being a democratic republic.

In occupied Kashmir, all business establishments, government and private offices, banks and courts remained closed while traffic was off the road. Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary forces were patrolling the streets and all the roads leading to Bakhshi Stadium in Srinagar, where the main Republic Day function was held, were sealed.

It happened for the first time during the last twenty years that due to the apprehension of the public resistance, Indian authorities desisted from hoisting Indian flag on the Ghanta Ghar at Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

The APHC-AJK chapter organized a demonstration in front of the United Nations Observers’ Office in Islamabad, which was led by the Convenor, Mehmood Ahmed Saghar. On the occasion a memorandum presented to the UN Office urged the United Nations to help stop Indian atrocities against the innocent people of the occupied territory. In Muzaffarabad, a big procession was taken out, which marched through different streets of the city. Kashmiri leaders expressed the hope that the Kashmir liberation movement was destined to succeed.

In Brussels, a big demonstration was staged outside the Indian High Commission, which was led by the Chairman of Kashmir Centre, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo. In a separate function organised by the Centre, the speakers including Chairman of Pakistan’s Senate, Farooq H Naek, speaker of the AJK Assembly, Shah Ghulam Qadir and the Chairman of the Centre, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo, urged India to come forward in a big way to settle the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations.

Amnesty says Kashmir key to peace

It reflects poorly on New Delhi's political sense that it has failed to realise that the more it tries to suppress the Kashmiris' urge to get out of its cruel hold, the more entrenched in the people's psyche becomes the freedom struggle and the more conscious the world gets of the urgency with which the dispute needs to be resolved.

Amnesty International recently called upon President Obama to raise the issue of India's brutal oppression in Occupied Kashmir when he meets Prime Minister Singh in Washington.

Its words, "The Indian side of Kashmir is an area where the security forces commit mass human rights abuses with impunity...facilitated by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and other similar laws."

Similarly, President Hu and President Obama, in a joint statement, have observed that the two sides, "agreed to cooperate...(in) bringing about more stable, peaceful relations in all of South Asia". Secretary of State Clinton maintained, in an interview on Friday, that the US wanted the resumption of talks between India and Pakistan to sort out their differences, including Kashmir.

However, India has been greatly upset at these declarations and continues to defy the calls for an understanding look at the situation that the lingering dispute creates both within Occupied Kashmir and outside.

It is a measure of Pakistan's disappointment that Foreign Minister Qureshi had to say that though we were urging for the resumption of talks, we were not looking for a photo session; we wanted 'constructive engagement and meaningful dialogue'.

He stressed that any talks without the participation of Pakistan would be futile. He had in mind India's efforts to engage the Kashmiri leaders from the occupied state to find a solution.

Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit did some plain speaking, when he remarked that India did not want peace in the region.

His conclusion is absolutely justified since New Delhi refuses to come to the negotiating table just because it would have to discuss Kashmir.

It is well known that even when the composite dialogue was going on it avoided coming to grips with the issue. As the history of post-partition reveals, the fate of Indo-Pakistan relations is closely linked to the settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the aspirations of Kashmiris.

Is the freedom struggle in Kashmir merely "cross border terrorism" from the Pakistan side?

The indigenous nature of the current Kashmir freedom struggle is well known: it started almost 12 years ago in response to the killing of 100 peaceful Kashmiri demonstrators in Srinagar; over 83198 Kashmiris have sacrificed their lives in this struggle; thousands of Kashmiris have been injured, tortured or arbitrarily detained. No external influence could have persuaded the Kashmiri people to sustain their struggle for so long in the face of India's brutal military repression. It is only genuine and popular quest for freedom, which evokes such monumental sacrifices. Under the auspices of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Dr. Paula R. Newberg wrote: "Since 1989, the number of dead (in Srinagar) has reached tens of thousands, the exact number unknown. Mostly boys and men, they have died for their religious beliefs, their political beliefs or because they were in the way. The circumstances of birth have become the accidents of death".

The legitimate response to India's military repression cannot be denigrated as "terrorism". The targets of the Kashmiri freedom fighters have been the instruments of India's occupation, not innocent civilians who are Kashmiris.

Indeed, terrorist acts in Kashmir have been largely sponsored by Indian agencies and "agents provocateur". Amnesty International's report "IF they are dead; tell us", and Human Rights Watch report "India's secret army in Kashmir", both testify that India has used Kashmiri renegades to carry out the worst forms of repression and human rights violations in Kashmir. Such acts of terrorism are an integral element of the Indian strategy to malign the Kashmiri freedom movement and to exploit international abhorrence of terrorism. Renegade groups have been given names by India like "Ikhwan-ul-Muslemoon" and "Taliban" to play upon the fears in the western countries and to make the repression of Kashmiris more palatable.

Srinagar, July 08 (KMS): In Srinagar, the occupation authorities imposed curfew in several localities, today, following massive protests against the killing of a student, who had gone missing from Maisuma on Friday. People took to the streets with high-pitched pro-liberation slogans in Gaw Kadal, Nauhatta, Kawdara, Rainawari, Habba Kadal and Rajouri Kadal.

Shops, business establishments and educational institutions in these areas were closed and transport remained off the road. Several protestors were injured when Indian police fired teargas shells to disperse them. An angry mob set fire a police van in Maisuma. Processions were taken out from the Kashmir University and Islamia College in Srinagar.

Israr Mushtaq Dar, a second year student of Islamia College, had gone missing on Friday and his throat-slit body was recovered in Rainawari, today. The protestors told media men that the troops had martyred the student in custody.

Earlier, people rushed to the house of the JKLF Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik in Srinagar, over-run police barricades and took him in a procession to Lal Chowk. The JKLF Chairman was under house arrest for the last two months.

Anti-India demonstrations were also held in Palhalan and Sopore. Agitation continued in Shopian for the 39th day, today.

On the other hand, addressing a delegate session in Badgam, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi and Professor Abdul Ghani Butt urged India to stop human rights violations in occupied Kashmir to create a conducive atmosphere for resolving the Kashmir dispute.

The APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in a statement in Srinagar, expressed grief and sorrow over the sad demise of the Shahi Imam of Jamia Masjid Delhi, Maulana Syed Abdullah Bukhari, who died after prolonged illness, today.

In occupied Kashmir, despite curfew and other restrictions imposed by the authorities, people took to the streets at several places against the illegal detention of APHC leaders under draconian Public Safety Act.The people also protested against the restrictions on the movement of the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

Forceful anti-India demonstrations marked with crippling strike were held at Nowhatta, Gojawara, Baramulla, Kupwara, Sopore, Islamabad, Shopian, Pattan and Palhalan. Dozens of people were injured when Indian police personnel resorted to brute force to break up the demonstrations.

The APHC Chairman while talking on telephone to Kashmir Media Service, urged India to reciprocate APHC’s five point proposal of the withdrawal of troops, repeal of black laws, inclusion of Kashmiri leadership in the talks process, free movement and free trade within different parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides the APHC Chairman, other Hurriyet leaders including Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Yasmin Raja continued to remain under house arrest and were not even allowed to offer Juma prayers.

Curfew was imposed in Pulwama and the troops had sealed all entry points to the town to prevent Pulwama March, call for which was given by senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader Syed Ali Gilani, supported by the APHC Chairman.

The Executive Directors of Kashmir Centers in London and Brussels, Professor Nazir Shawl and Barrister Abdul Majid Tramboo in their separate statements condemned the detention of Hurriyet leaders, Syed Ali Gilani, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Aasiya Andrabi, Mohammad Salim Nunnaji, Mussarat Aalam Butt and Farooq Ahmad Dar.

Undeclared curfew in Srinagar, Shopian, Kashmir

In occupied Kashmir, all major cities and towns have been sealed and nobody is being allowed to venture out to march towards Shopian where two young innocent women were raped and murdered by Indian troops on May 30. The authorities have imposed undeclared curfew in downtown areas of Srinagar and in Shopian town to prevent people from holding anti-India demonstrations. People of the downtown areas told media men that they are not being allowed to move out of their houses by Indian troops and police personnel.

Indian troops holding heavy automatic weapons and sticks have been witnessed marching the deserted streets. All exit and entrance points at the district headquarters have been sealed.

A high level meeting of the authorities, which was held in Srinagar, yesterday evening, decided that March would not be allowed. "No march will be allowed. We have decided it," said a senior police officer after the meeting. "We have decided not to allow any body to march from any place," he added.

“CRPF and police personnel have been deployed wherever it was needed and no one will be allowed to take out procession, said a senior police official from South Kashmir.

On the other hand, the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mohammad Yasin Malik, Mian Abdul Qayoom, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi and other Hurriyet leaders have been placed under house arrest. Black laws are root cause of Indian state terrorism

The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League, Muhammad Farooq Rehmani, while condemning the rape and murder of two young women by Indian troops in Shopian, said that black laws are root cause of stepped up Indian state terrorism and violence against women in occupied Kashmir.

Farooq Rehmani in a statement said that reaction of the masses against the Shopian incident was natural and justified. He said that it was not the first incident but the troops time and again committed heinous crimes and the world witnessed all such happenings as a mute spectator.

Farooq Rehmani said that the Shopian incident was a deliberate attempt to break the political and psychological will of Kashmiris for freedom from Indian occupation. He said that if human rights violations were not stopped in the occupied territory and troops were not withdrawn the situation would further deteriorate.

He called upon the world community and international human rights organisations to take notice of Indian state terrorism and massive violation of human rights in occupied Kashmir. He said that settlement of the decades-long Kashmir dispute was imperative for establishing permanent peace in South Asia.

Immediately after the meeting, Indian police personnel took Nayeem Ahmed Khan into custody and shifted him to an unknown destination.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown continued for the seventh consecutive day, today, all across the Kashmir Valley against the molestation and subsequent murder of two women by the troops in Shopian. Forensic Science Laboratory report into the incident issued, today, revealed that the two women were raped before being murdered.

At least 20 people were feared dead as a vehicle, they were travelling in, fell into Chinab River at Karara in Doda. Three Indian troopers including a Junior Commissioned Officer were killed and three others injured in different road accidents in Ramban and Poonch areas.

Boycott Fake Kashmir Election

In occupied Kashmir, the fourth phase of Indian parliamentary elections, today, was marked with a complete protest strike, anti-India demonstrations and an overall people’s boycott of the polls. The polling remained abysmally low and the polling booths gave a deserted look. In many localities of Srinagar city, the polling was below than one percent and at many places Indian troops forcibly herded people towards polling booths.

Fake casting of votes by the occupation authorities was also noticed.

People took to the streets in protest against the holding of elections in Lal Chowk, Chanapora, Qamarwari, Nattipora, Barzalla, Zaindar Mohallah, Fateh Kadal, Batamaloo and Aarigam. Pro Freedom, Pro Pakistan and anti-election slogans were raised on the occasion. Dozens of people were injured when Indian terrorists army and police personnel resorted to massive tear gas shelling to disperse the protesting youth. Clashes between the protestors and the Indian police personnel were witnessed at Zenakot till last reports came in. Unidentified youth hurled a petrol bomb at a polling station in Lal Bazaar. A special police officer was killed in an attack in Neeldhok in Rajouri.

The occupation authorities had placed Hurriyet leaders including the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Gilani and Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi under house arrest. Thousands of policemen and paramilitary troopers wearing bulletproof jackets and carrying assault rifles were seen marching the deserted streets of Srinagar. The troops had erected the barricades and laid concertina wires to foil anti-election protests.

The APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq talking to the KMS on telephone said that the indifference shown by the people towards the election drama should serve as an eye opener to India that should come forward in a serious manner to resolve the Kashmir dispute, once and for all.

The protesters raised high-pitched slogans in favour of freedom and against fake elections. The Bar Association staged a protest at the court premises in Srinagar.

Earlier, the occupation authorities had placed under house arrest several Hurriyet leaders and activists including the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Gilani. Muhammad Yasin Malik, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Yasmeen Raja and Farida Behnji were also put under house arrest. They were not allowed even to offer Juma prayers. Indian police personnel arrested APHC leader, Zafar Akbar Butt while leading an anti-0election procession in Islamabad town. Another Hurriyet leader, Firdous Ahmed Shah was arrested from his residence in Srinagar. The JKLF-R took out a procession at Kokar Bazar in Srinagar.

The APHC Chairman in a media interview in Srinagar strongly condemned the use of undemocratic methods by Indian authorities to prevent Hurriyet leaders from reaching to people with their anti-election campaign. Hazrat Umer Farooq says,” Man was born free, but why you have kept him in chains of slavery?” Freedom has been the watchword and rallying point in Kashmir for many decades. Certainly it is not everybody’s privilege to sing the song of freedom. Only those hearts throb for it that actually see the claws of oppression in a human society and have courage to speak for the welfare of mankind. A freedom loving heart is full of affection for humanity and is always ready to take risks for the freedom of the suffering people.
The people of Kashmir have been facing traumatic conditions under despots for centuries. Even their own Kashmiri Kings except a few were not kind to them. But it was the Mughal King Akbar who treacherously brought Kashmir under his Delhi rule. The tragic episode upset Kashmiris in every way and much more terror and tyranny was perpetuated by Afghan governors and Sikh rulers. This humiliating state of affairs did not end here. Although the British inflicted an ignominious defeat on the Sikh rulers of Punjab, but Kashmiris were sold to Dogra Rajas of Jammu, who under the patronage of British treated them like deaf and dumb cattle for one hundred years. According to the British historians the status of Kashmiris was definitely worse than the people of France before the French revolution. The governors of Delhi, Kabul and Lahore looked down upon Kashmiris as the Roman Pro-councils treated Africans. The famous commissioner of settlement for Kashmir Walter R Lawrence was compelled to make these remarks in his book the “Valley of Kashmir”
“It is the matter for surprise that under rapid transition of governments varying in race, religion and language, the people of the valley should have retained their peculiar nationality unimpaired.”
After the Sikh rulers Dogra rulers of Jammu thought it their prerogative to suppress and terrorize the people of Kashmir. It is here when the dark age of Kashmir entered into the 20th century. After the first war of India’s independence in 1857 some British journalists and writers went to Kashmir and on their return to London, they wrote their observations in some magazines of London. They say, “Kashmiris have been brutally terrorized so they express their grief in mosques in Fajr prayers, their hearts are broken, which might have caused 1857 calamity to British citizens in Meerut and Delhi. These writers say it was not the right decision to hand over the destiny of worshipers of one God to the idolaters, who follow many gods and goddesses”. It is a fact that the Kashmiris during that age used to express their grief in Natiyah verses with an impressive language.
In the third decade of the 2oth century the people of Kashmir began street protests against the religious and political injustice and economic exploitation, resulting in the tragedy of 13 July 1931, when dogra police massacred 21 Muslims under indiscriminate firing, before the central jail of Srinagar. It sent shock waves throughout the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and as its after effects people began offering great sacrifices and facing medieval punishments by the Dogra rulers till 1947, when India became free and a new country—Pakistan was born on the map of South Asia. The creation of Pakistan was a historical victory for the Muslims of the sub continent. The people of Jammu and Kashmir were already aware of the Pakistan movement and they were sympathetic towards it. They were eagerly awaiting the clarion call of the dawn of freedom in Kashmir. The termination of the British Raj in India meant an end to the rule of princes in India but no body knew that another dark period of trial and tribulation was in store for Kashmiris. The leaders of the Indian national congress and the fanatic Hindu communalists were aware of the geo political importance of the state of J&K. Therefore they had started wooing Kashmiri leaders in 1930s in many ways. Consequently their hypocrisy and the relations between Pandit Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah laid down adverse effects on the destiny of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947. The congress leadership of India believed in extending their own strategic interests to the far-flung mountain ranges, skies and waters of the region. A close associate of pandit Nehru Mr. VP Menon wrote in his book ‘the story of integration’ that ‘Kashmir was important for our security and integrity in the region’. Before the partition of India Gandhiji and some other Hindu leaders paid mysterious visits to Kashmir and discussed future of the state with the Dorgra rulers and national conference leaders. In the light of their impressions they chalked out their future strategy about Jammu & Kashmir. The confession comes from the pen of Jag Mohan a former Governor of occupied Kashmir who is known for his anti Muslim role both as Governor of Delhi under the rule of Indra Ghanghi and as Governor of Kashmir in 1990. In his book,” My frozen turbulence in Kashmir” He testifies:-
“ Gandhi’s visit to Kashmir in July–August 1947, his meeting with the Maharaja on August 1, dismissal of R.C. Kak from the office of prime Minster on August 10 , release of Sheikh Abdullah on September 29, after tendering ‘unqualified apology’ in his letter of September 26, strengthening of the road link between Pathankot and Jammu, and the scheme to construct a boat bridge over the river Ravi, all would seem to suggest that ground was being prepared for accession of the state to India; at least the possibility was not being ruled out…..”(Page 83)
After Sheikh Abdullah’s release on Sep 29, Pandit Nehru sent a letter to him in Srinagar through Dawarika Nath Kachru Secretary General of the All India States people’s conference, who attended a high level meeting of the top leaders of the National Conference in Srinagar and also met with Abdullah and wrote a letter to Mr. Nehru on 4 Sept, 1947:-
“Sheik Sahib and his close associates have decided for the Indian Union. But, this decision has not been announced yet and the impression is being given that so far the National Conference have taken no decision.” (Kashmir article 370 by Mohan Krishan Teng)
The disclosures of this letter refute India’s propaganda that the decision to accept accession of Kashmir and sent aerial troops to Srinagar on October 27, was made after the tribesmen attacked Kashmir. In order to seal the destiny of the people of Kashmir and remove all geo-hurdles in the way of Kashmir’s accession with India Vice Roy Lord Mountbatten played through Red Cliff the final mischief, by changing the boundary commission report to hand over Muslim majority district of Gurdaspur to India. After this conspiracy a fictitious letter of accession in the name of Maharaja was drafted and thus Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar on October 27 1947. This tragic event struck a hard-blow on the long struggle of freedom for Kashmir and now they had to fight with equal zeal and zest against the neo-imperialism of India in Kashmir. The people of Kashmir accepted the new challenge and decided to carry on their struggle for freedom. The government of India was frustrated to see the angry reaction of the people of Kashmir against the accession with Delhi. So Lord Mountbatten and Nehru in their separate messages to Pakistan and Kashmir declared this accession as provisional and assured that the people of Kashmir will be given every opportunity to decide their future through a free, fear and impartial plebiscite, under the international supervision of UN. On August 7 1952 Pt. Nehru declared:-
“It is an international problem. We do not want to win people against their will and with the help of armed forces and if the people of the state of Jammu and Kashmir so wish to Part Company with us, they can go their way and we shall go our way. We want no forced marriages, no forced unions like this so we accept this basic preposition that this question is going to be decided finally by the good will and pledge of the people of Kashmir, not I say, by the good will and pleasure of even this parliament, if it so chooses, not because this parliament may not have the strength to decide it. I do not deny that because this parliament has not only laid down in this particular matter that a certain policy will be pursued in regard to J& K state but it has been our policy…
But whether it is a pain and torment, if the people of Kashmir want to go out, let them go because we will not keep them against their will however painful it may be to us. That is the policy that India will pursue…Because the strongest bonds that bind will not be the bonds of your armies or even of your constitution, to which so much reference has been made, but bonds which are stronger than the constitution and law and armies—bonds that bind through love and affection and understanding of various people…”
Gandhiji visited Srinagar for the first time at the age of 77. The public opinion in Kashmir forced him to declare:-
“…the princes being the creation of British imperialism and the British having quitted India, the people in the states were their own masters and Kashmiris must therefore decide without any coercion or show of it from within and without to which dominion they should belong.”
While addressing the Security Council on 8 February 1957 Krishna Mennon Defense Minister of India said:-
“If it is possible for any sovereign state to cede territory, if as a result of plebiscite, if ever it did come, the people decided that they did not want to stay with India, then our duty at that time would be to adopt those constitutional procedures which would enable us to separate that territory.”
Keeping in view the world opinion and the past history of Kashmir, the Security Council also upheld the principle of the right of self determination, affirming that the people of Kashmir would be given opportunity to decide their future through a free, fair and impartial plebiscite to be held under the auspices of the UNO. Thus a cease-fire was executed between India and Pakistan. After the truce agreement between India and Pakistan the state of Jammu and Kashmir got divided and its people were separated from each other. Now India began using all evil and sinister methods to curb down the demand for plebiscite. At the same time the commander-in-chief of the Indian army addressed a top level gathering of national conference in the Baramula camp. He said, “The basic emergency task of the army has finished, but the goal to give this accession a truly public color is to be started now. This goal can be achieved by political and cultural activities and not by force. You are the future upholders of this mission.”
India and Sheikh Abdullah knew well that the people of Kashmir had not liked the Indian army in their State. Even National Conference was divided over the accession issue. Only Abdullah due to his personal relations with Mr. Nehru plunged Kashmir into this whirlpool. On the very first day of the troop landing in Srinagar, the Indian soldiers killed some civilians on their way to Badami Bagh Camp and humiliated women in the city of Srinagar and elsewhere. The people had gathered in Lal Chowk and expressed their anger against the military attack and the human rights abuses by the army in Srinagar. All these developments were of grave concern and shame for both the Indian leadership and the National Conference leaders.
India feared humiliation in Kashmir from every angle. He had made the promise of plebiscite before the world. The people of Kashmir were more eager to see the arrangements for plebiscite and certainly in spite of torture in police custody, imprisonment and exile of many political workers, there were strong pro-Pakistan tendencies among Kashmiris. Therefore, India paid equal attention to both military and political aspects in Kashmir. Notwithstanding the UN resolutions, India began raising the numerical strength of her army and stockpiling of arms and ammunition in Kashmir. Sheikh Abdullah’s Government and his party were given free hand to crush the opposition and free press by draconian laws. Thus workers of the national conference launched a campaign of terror against the pro-plebiscite workers throughout the state. They would not wait for police to arrest a man, rather they themselves having arrest warrants in their pockets picked political workers and arrested them for listening to Radio Pakistan or Azad Kashmir Radio. These were banned radio stations in early 1950s.
In order to divert the public attention from plebiscite, Sheikh Abdullah with the tacit approval of Delhi conducted sham elections for the state constituent assembly in 1951. But before that the assembly of 1946 was illegally dissolved. In the 1951 assembly elections all the 75 candidates of the ruling party were returned unopposed. The UN Security Council had already passed the resolution declaring that the elections in Jammu & Kashmir would never be accepted as a substitute for plebiscite. Dr. Joseph corbel member of the UNCIP has made the following remark on the so called elections in, his book danger in Kashmir” “No dictator could do better than this”.
In spite of her lofty claims about democracy India continued human rights abuses in Kashmir and held every time fraudulent elections in the state. This practice continues unabated to this time. In July 1977 when a former Home Minister Mr. Chaudry Charan Singh visited Kashmir in connection with election campaign, he confessed that all the previous elections held in Jammu and Kashmir were rigid and manipulated. The story of elections for the State Assembly since 1951 is always a ridiculous one, whether these elections were held under the rule of Sheikh Abdullah or Bakhshi Ghulam Muhammad or Ghulam Muhammad Sadiq or Mir Qasim or Farooq Abdullah. The stand to boycott these elections by the freedom fighting parties has every time been vindicated.
Sheikh Abdullah and Delhi rulers failed to suppress and change the popular sentiments of Kashmiris between 1947 and 1953, although the government had been armed with very harsh laws of detention without trail. Strangely, if on the one hand the Indian government was sharpening its teeth against Kashmiris, on the other hand Sheikh Abdullah was becoming isolated from the people in the state. 19 July 1953 is a remarkable day of those fateful years when against all political odds citizens of Srinagar defied prohibitory orders and thousands gathered in Nawakadal Srinagar to protest against the accession with India. Some leading members of the ruling National Conference and some Hindu lawyers led by Khawaja Ghulam Mohiuddin Qarah participated in a big demonstration and launched the political movement for freedom and Pakistan. The new Phenomenon terribly shook the government and the party of Sheikh Abdullah. He began rethinking and some other factors also created differences between sheikh Abdullah and the Government of India, resulting in the arrest of sheikh Abdullah on 9 August 1953. His deputy Bakhshi Ghulam Muhammad took over as the new prime Minster of Jammu and Kashmir. The following decades saw a strong popular movement of plebiscite growing in Jammu and Kashmir, and the people in thousands faced imprisonments, tortures, detentions and killings for decades together. Two political organizations namely J&K Plebiscite Front patronized by Sheikh Abdullah and Kashmir political conference founded by Kh. Ghulam Mohiuddin Qarah were the leading organizations of the times in Jammu and Kashmir. This was certainly a unique period of freedom movement in Kashmir, when the inhabitants of the occupied region from Ladakh to Kathua irrespective of cast, creed and region took part in the struggle for independence. No black laws or revengeful steps by the regime could deter the people from lining-up with the struggle.
On 29 December 1963 the occupied state rose in revolt against India and Indian stooges, when the sacred hair was stolen mysteriously from Hazratbal Shrine cum Mosque. The demand for the sacred hair instantly changed into a full-scale mass freedom movement in the length and breadth of Kashmir. Pandit Nehru was forced to release many political workers including Sheikh Abdullah from prisons. After having detailed talks with Abdullah in Delhi, Pandit Nehru sent him and his associates Mirza Afzal Bagh, Mouvlana Masoodi and others to Pakistan to negotiate a constitutional settlement of Kashmir with Pakistan. The process of dialogue could not move forward due to the death of Pt. Nehru. Thus Sheikh Abdullah cut short his visit and returned to Delhi without any success on the dispute of Kashmir.
1965 the freedom struggle in Kashmir was at its peak and we have a comment of Seleeg Harison, then correspondent of Washington post over the situation in the State of Jammu and Kashmir:-
“I visited Kashmir in July in 1965, and I cam e to know that the inhabitants of Kashmir are against Indian rule in a solid manner, and 12 Indian army brigades are trying to contain the movement of the right of self determination.”(Washington post 14 August 1965)
This situation was used by India as a pretext to cross the international border and attack Pakistan from Lahore. But after 7 days war the world leaders intervened and thus the war came to an end, which was followed by Tashkent Pact between the two countries on 10 January 1966.
During the September war the ‘Defense of India Rules was promulgated and many people were arrested under draconian laws in thousands and detained for years without trial. Many People especially living along the cease-fire line were forced to migrate to AJK and Pakistan and many more were killed, tortured and humiliated in army camps. In 1966 Indian spying network was further strengthened and additional troops were sent to Kashmir to quell the mass uprising in the state but in spite of the cease-fire between India and Pakistan the struggle for freedom spread throughout the state and a new phenomenon in the form of underground armed activities was introduced by the younger generation. Many villages and towns were burnt and looted by army between Aug and October 1965, which includes the wide spread fire of Batmallo Srinagar on August 14 1965. The Indian Army was blamed for this fire too.
The Tashkent Pact 1966 was followed by Simla Pact in 1972 between India and Pakistan. On the other side India engaged Plebiscite Front leaders and maneuvered another Delhi accord with Sheikh Abdullah in 1975. It is also called Indra-Abdullah Pact 1975. But the people of Kashmir rejected every time these bilateral agreements. On February 28, 1975 the whole of Jammu and Kashmir went on a historical strike over a call given by the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Late Zulfiqar Ali Bhuthoo to protest against the Delhi agreement of Sheikh Abdullah and Indra Gandhi, which is an echoing day in the history of Kashmir. State wide movement of plebiscite received severe set back from bilateral agreements and Daka fall, resulting in mounted pressure on the movement in 1970s. But a new generation of Kashmiris kept the flame of freedom burning. They looked forward and discovered new horizons amidst dark clouds and hostile winds. Although some groups of young men had started underground armed struggle in 1960s, but the struggle launched in late 1980s was more pronounced, which sent away more forceful signals of liberation to the world in general and India in particular. It means that the fire of freedom will not extinguish in Kashmir till Kashmiris regain their lost independence. Every big or small event in 1970s and 1980s frustrated India and puzzled and stunned political and religious leaders who became irrelevant in Kashmir. A daylong forceful demonstration by thousands of cricket spectators against India in the Sonawar stadium in Oct 1983 shook India and the chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was angrily asked to explain his weakness behind this anti India outburst in the heart of the capital. On 11 Feb. India challenged Kashmiris by sending Muhammad Maqbool Butt to gallows in Tihar jail Delhi, disregarding legal procedures and international human rights law, resulting in further alienation of Kashmiris from India. In 1987, Muslim United Front an amalgam of different political and religious parties participated in assembly elections to challenge India through the ballot paper. But, India and Farooq Abdullah raped the sanctity of the ballot by rigging the elections and declaring NC candidates as winners. The subsequent events further exposed India’s nefarious designs in Kashmir.
1980’s was a decade of political upheavals, trials and tribulations, which gave people self-confidence and the freedom movement, achieved the character of all-pervading popular Intifada in 1990. Further Indian onslaught and intransigence pushed the movement towards armed struggle. It was backed by popular support and became known by the term Jihad. Thus began a new period of great human sacrifices in Kashmir. The people of Kashmir discovered new soul, spirit and new world in their land of birth. The Indian claim to be a big democracy of the world was fully exposed in Kashmir. India to every Kashmiri was now a wolf in lambs’ clothes.
During the past fifteen years India has committed heinous crimes in Kashmir in the form of untold and unprecedented abuses of human rights on men, women and children, besides genocide and custodial killings of over eighty thousand people. India’s naked dance of rape, murder, loot and arson continues unabated in the occupied region. The question is asked how long the champions of world peace and civilization will see the truth and wait.
The roots of the freedom movement have gone very deep into the history of Kashmir. The people of Kashmir believe in unfettered struggle and are never ready to retrieve and compromise even under untoward circumstances of oppression. In the past Kashmiris revolted against the sale deal of Amritsar and they equally rose against the annexation of Kashmir by India in 1947 and showed to the world the ugliest face of India’s so-called secular democracy. The Kashmir struggle has almost historical continuity. Neither agreements between India and Pakistan nor between Srinagar and Delhi could break the chain of its continuity in the last fifty seven years. Kashmir struggle is based upon the right of self-determination under the principle of universal declaration of human rights and UN resolutions on Kashmir. Notwithstanding moral crisis in the conscience of the world powers UN continues to regard Kashmir as a disputed region where people have not exercised their inalienable right—the right of self-determination. It is the oldest international dispute on the UN agenda and also the Indo-Pakistan record can bear witness to this fact. India always made futile attempts to portrait it as its internal constitutional problem but the unprecedented sacrifices of the people of Kashmir compelled former president Bill Clinton to call it a flash point of Asia. Nowadays no world leader has to say anything other than this remark by any American leader.
The current struggle is homegrown and nourishes with snowball spontaneity. India calls this movement as imported terrorism, which is a big lie. The relationship between Kashmiris and freedom fighters is like a fish in the water. Our society has embraced this movement and every section of the society has played vital role in furthering glorious cause of freedom. It is not a class war or communal, religious conflict, but the final goal of our struggles is freedom from India. There are no communal prejudices in Kashmir. Our peoples overwhelming majority believe in the simple teachings of Islam, never in narrow nationalism or terrorism. We believe in patriotism and communal harmony. In fact, Kashmiri Muslims and non-Muslims lived together a peaceful life in the past. But it was sad that the Hindu minority was misled by Indian communalists and thus they fled away from the valley in 1990. They fail to sympathize with the trauma of Kashmiri Muslims, who are humiliated by the brute force of Indian military. Despite hard facts Kashmiri Muslims have time and again invited migrant Hindus back to main stream of Kashmir. The present struggle owes its birth to the sacred blood of Kashmiris, and hopefully it will reach its destination with the help of almighty Allah.

Role of Freedom Struggle in the Kashmir Dispute

Kashmir is the long-standing dispute of over 13 million inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir who despite their geographical, religious, and linguistic differences are popularly known as Kashmiris. The people of Kashmir are the long—suffering people in South Asia and undoubtedly their struggle for freedom is a long-running popular movement like any other freedom struggle. For Indian and Pakistan it may be a dispute but for Kashmiris it is their right to fight for their freedom and the right of self determination. Kashmir is also a central factor determining political and economical relations between India and Pakistan

This can easily and simply be resolved if India like Pakistan is ready to recognize this birth right of the people of Kashmir. Kashmiris for the last several decades have been gazing longingly at their dream of freedom which has become their catch-word in the last one and a half decade.

The freedom struggle of Kashmir has a unique pivot-ability, spontaneity and centrality in the national and social life of Kashmiris. It is a candle light in a dark night round whose bright flames moths and butterflies burn their beautiful lives. They may burn in millions but the candle light will not extinguish till dawn. To every Kashmiri freedom is beauty and truth and they are always ready to die for their goal of freedom.

It is dimensional and now no more only a political issue. It has deep social bearings because the blood-soaked sacrifices of the people of Kashmir have shattered families, disturbed societies and moved human conscience. A Kashmiri is always proud of his participation and association with his freedom struggle of Kashmir.

The ebb and flow in the freedom struggle has equally influenced the question of the settlement of the future status of J&K.

No doubt, the political agitation in Kashmir began with the civil rights movement in 1920s and 1930s but it became a full-fledged struggle for the achievement of the right of self determination in 1947, when India annexed two-third of the region by her military might. The slogans such as plebiscite and will of the people became very popular in those days of the history. Mahjoor the national poet of Kashmir eulogized this concept lucidly in his verse. Pandit Nehru used the word referendum as a means to grant the right of self determination to the people of Jammu & Kashmir. He at the same time sought intervention of UN Security Council in Kashmir. Internationally the world debated on the dispute and passed numerous UN resolutions between 1940s and 60s. Unfortunately India started dilly-dallying and distracting from her promises of a free and impartial plebiscite and both India and Pakistan made futile bilateral efforts to settle the dispute but till date no bilateral agreement could bring peace and justice to Kashmir. India also signed some bilateral agreements with Kashmiri political leaders, in 1952 and 1975 causing further unrest among the masses which bursted out fully in 1990s like a volcano adding a new dimension in the form of armed resistance for freedom. This was yet another important opportunity to respond to the call of the time but India did not. Had India seen the writing on the wall in 1990, the irreparable human loss in Kashmir would have been stopped.

All the developments which shaped political upsurge in Kashmir and pointed to the vulnerability of this dispute testify that Kashmir is not a territorial conflict. It involves the right to freedom, the right to choose the destiny and right to self determination of some million human beings who live in this region. It is not a constitutional case between two or more provinces of the same country. It is still on the agenda of the United Nations.

In the recent years India has tried to equate it the freedom struggle with terrorism and persuade international community to declare it as a terrorist movement. This has only complicated the road to conflict resolution and the hope on the peace process in Kashmir has dwindled to almost nothing. Thousands of graves spread all over Kashmir belie India’s claims. More over continuity and spontaneity of human sacrifices in this environment of war against terrorism tells a different tale to the world if they listen.

India is still reluctant to include Kashmiris as a third party in her talks with Pakistan. Pakistan’s basic stand of talks is in line with the dialogue concept of Kashmiris.

We can say that the freedom struggle has changed the entire spectrum of Kashmir dispute. The people of Kashmir have discovered bright horizons of success. It is now the Kashmiri who is on the forefront. He is no longer a back bencher. He is a front bencher. He is the king without crown. Hence no two can sign one more bilateral agreement on Kashmir against the wishes of the people of Kashmir.

Dimensional strength of Kashmir struggle has positively affected the dispute of Kashmir. All the three parties of the dispute have to sit together and draw a comprehensive road map for resolution of the conflict to accomplish the urges and aspirations of the people. The role of the struggle is vital in the larger interests of the conflict resolution. The freedom struggle is in a way helping India and Pakistan to intensify their search for a just and durable solution.

Kashmiris have offered unprecedented sacrifices since 1980s and are continuing their freedom struggle courageously today. So it has a linkage with present past and future. It has also brought back a historical and futuristic view-point that there could be no settlement sane Kashmiris. Only the freedom struggle would compel India to agree upon a more flexible, viable and compatible road map based upon the participation of Kashmiris in the dialogue.

There is no place for status co, LOC or soft border as a solution in the eyes of Kashmiris. The freedom struggle aims at greater say of Kashmiris to resolve Kashmir dispute according to the universally acknowledged right—the right of self determination.

The freedom struggle to settle Kashmir dispute has made inroads in America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Kashmiris outside India and Pakistan are playing active diplomatic role to gain support for freedom and peaceful resolution of this imbroglio. NGOs Around the world are paying greater attention to the human rights conditions than in the past. Thus the resistance movement has attracted the bona-fide support of the global community. The freedom movement to bring the goal of a peaceful settlement nearer has become invincible. It has compelled the world to talk about Kashmir and facilitate although indirectly its peaceful solution. Under the given developments the resolution of Kashmir can not be put on the back burner again and gone are the days when one could think of relegating it to the future. Also the issue can not be seen through the tinted glasses of past and present rulers of Kashmir who perpetuated their tyranny on Kashmiris for their selfish ends and wasted 57 years of Jammu and Kashmir.

These are the defining moments of Kashmir history. A Kashmiri wants to define his slogans himself. A blood-soaked history of Kashmir is to be red in almost every home and hearth. So the Kashmir dispute must end with the new dawn and new sun for Kashmir. India’s constitutional and economic packages or cultural shows would mean little to Kashmiris and would not change the character of freedom struggle into dispute resolution as long as India is bent upon militarism in Kashmir. The present freedom struggle is really the only key to the resolution of conflict and it also can ensure the future of Kashmir as a nation.

At the end I would like to recall a thousand times valuable saying of an Algerian freedom fighter Saad Dahalk, who warned France in July 1960 in response to the latters proposal of constitutional autonomy. He said and I quote him, “Our people have not eaten grass and roots in order to obtain a new statute given as a concession.”

In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, led a procession participated by thousands of people in Bandipore, today.Mirwaiz arrived in the town to a rousing welcome and the people on the occasion raised full-throated anti-India and Freedom Slogans.

Addressing a gathering at the main Chowk of Bandipore and earlier Juma congregation at Jamia Masjid of the town, the APHC Chairman, emphasized that no amount of Indian state terrorism would deter Kashmiris from continuing their liberation struggle till its logical end. He urged the international community to take notice of the fact that Kashmiri youth were randomly killed by Indian troops to punish them for raising the democratic voice of right to self-determination. The APHC chairman maintained that the people of Kashmir would remain united to realize the dreams of Kashmiri martyrs.

Similar demonstrations were held in Khaigam Pakharpora in Pulwama and Bomai in Sopore in protest against the recent killings in the areas. People in large numbers took to streets demanding withdrawal of Indian troops form occupied Kashmir. Complete strike was observed in Bamai area on the second day, today.

APHC leaders, Maulana Abbas Ansari, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Yasmeen Raja, Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl, Mohammad Abdullah Tari, Pandit Bhushan Bazaz, Jamaat-e-Islami of occupied Kashmir and JKLF-R in their separate statements denounced the recent killings by the troops in Bomai, Nowhatta and Pakharpora areas.

GAUHATI, India—Depressed from how New Delhi is suppressing local Assamese people who want to carve a separate homeland out of India, people in Assam waved Pakistan's flags in five districts.The eastern Indian state is one of a dozen Indian states in the north and east where ferocious freedoms movements are in full swing, demanding the right of self determination from Indian rule.As usual, the Indian government, blaming Pakistani agencies for the violence, has ordered an immediate enquiry for this incident.

The officials in New Delhi are so disturbed by this that they have invoked patriotism while asking newspaper editors across India to black out any news about the freedom movements.This week a student delegation visited the State’s governor and told him that ‘the villagers informed us that the miscreants were shouting slogans like Pakistan zindabad [Long live Pakistan] through loudspeakers in Dalgaon and some other border areas,” according to a report in The Assam Tribune.The Indian paper called on the government to give “stern punishment to those who hoisted Pakistani flags.”

The Indian Express reported the story in one paragraph: “Meanwhile, media persons saw a Pakistani flag in Sonaripara and Mohanpur villages and took photographs of them. Local television channels also ran footage of the flags. Officials and security forces denied any knowledge of the presence of the flags.New Delhi is disturbed by this new trend where the Pakistani flag has emerged as a symbol of freedom in India.

Indian officials are still smarting from the shock of a unanimous rejection of India across Kashmir. For years the Kashmiris have been marking India’s national day on Aug. 15 as a Black Day. But this year, Kashmir witnessed a unanimous civil disobedience and massive street protests where Kashmiris joined in raising the Pakistani flag and chanting slogans rejecting their forced inclusion in the Indian state.

The massive protests shocked the Indian media and ordinary Indians who for years were shielded by New Delhi authorities from ground realities in Kashmir and were fed an official version that almost the entire free Indian media adhered to without asking questions. The size and the impressive unanimity of Kashmiri protests this year helped break Indian official media blackout and provided the Indian people a chance to see for their own what their governments have been hiding for decades now, where the Kashmir dispute was often peddled as a Pakistani creation and not the result of indigenous Kashmiri demands.

LAHORE-Kashmir Solidarity Day will be observed on February 5 (today) in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir with great national fervour.
It will be a public holiday and all govt, semi-govt offices, educational institutions, commercial centres and markets will remain closed.
The day is observed to express solidarity with Kashmiri brethren in their just struggle to resolve the Kashmir dispute according to UN resolutions.
The dispute is unresolved since the past 60 years after the Indian refusal to allow plebiscite in Kashmir in order to facilitate Kashmiris to decide their fate according to the UN resolutions which were adopted to resolve conflict between India and Pakistan on Kashmir issue.
The successive Indian govts not only refused to hold plebiscite but continued rhetoric of Kashmir as ‘atootang’ of India.
During Pervez Musharraf’s regime, a fresh attempt was made to resolve Kashmir dispute by dialogue but Indian stubborn attitude hampered the dialogue between Pervez Musharraf and Indian former Prime Minister Vajpayee.
However, later both the countries agreed to resume the composite dialogue including Kashmir dispute alongwith other issues of trade and cultural exchange. Both the countries also resolved to make confidence building measures before the meaningful talks.
However, nothing tangible came out of these dialogues despite unilateral CBMs by Pakistan and now the composite dialogue are also not progressing as anticipated.
The political, social organisations and Kashmiri organisations will stage protest demos, seminars and symposium on the day. One minute silence would also be observed to pay tributes to Kashmiri martyres.
A chain of human hands will be made by Pakistani and Kashmiri people from Rawalpindi/Islamabad to Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir as a sign of unity and solidarity. Pakistani and Kashmiri delegations will present memorandum to UN office in Islamabad demanding plebiscite in Kashmir according to the UN resolutions.
In Lahore, a number of seminars and symposium will be held on the day. Nazria Pakistan Foundation, Kashmir Action Committee, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Kashmir Centre and other Kashmiri organisations will stage protest demos.
President, PM for just solution of Kashmir
Our staff reporter adds: President Pervez Musharraf has said that Pakistan would continue to extend its moral, political and diplomatic support for a just and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the wishes of Kashmiri people.
“We remain engaged in a sincere, sustained and purposeful dialogue with India on Kashmir. We believe that with sincerity, courage and flexibility, we can achieve a solution to the long-standing Kashmir dispute,” the President said in his message on Kashmir Solidarity Day.
He said that Pakistan always stressed the need to end violence and human rights abuses in Indian occupied Kashmir. He said that Pakistan firmly believed that an enabling environment is necessary for the success of peace process.
“Today, we observe the Kashmir Solidarity Day; we salute the families of over ninety thousand Kashmiris who have sacrificed their lives in the valiant struggle to attain their inalienable right to freedom. Pakistan extends its full support for the inherent rights of the Kashmiri people to determine their own destiny,” the President said.
Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro said,”The Government of Pakistan remains steadfast in extending its full support to the Kashmiris in their struggle of freedom.”
“We observe Kashmir Solidarity Day every year to mark our unwavering political, moral and diplomatic support to the valiant struggle of our Kashmiri brothers and sisters to achieve their legitimate right to self-determination,” the Prime Minister said in his message on Kashmir Solidarity Day.
The Prime minister said that on behalf of the Government and the people, he would like to say that Kashmir Solidarity Day would be observed across the country and Azad Kashmir today (Tuesday) with a pledge to express solidarity with the oppressed Kashmiri people in their struggle for right to self-determination.

I dont know if to say "Happy Kashmir Day" because the situation in occupied Kashmir is not such that we should be celebrating. For 60 years the people of Indian occupied Kashmir have only faced Martial Law. India claim to be the world largest democracy but in Kashmir the people have no right to choose. India's first Prime Minister said that India would hold an election in Kashmir to determine which nation the people of Kashmir wanted to join, but 60 years later nothing. Judging by India's recent brutalities we shouldn't expect elections in Kashmir in the near future. India has used force to keep its federation. They used force in Jundagh, Hyderabad, Goa, Kashmir and many other places. At peace talks India seems ready to talk about everything except for Kashmir. 60 years on its about time that India fulfill the promise that it made to the people of Kashmir 60 years ago. Let them decide, let them have a voice in your democracy, let them vote.

Call for the observance of the Day has been given by the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani and the High Court Bar Association of occupied Kashmir. They have appealed to the people of the occupied territory to observe complete shutdown and hoist black flags on the rooftops of their houses on the occasion.

On the other hand, a red alert has been sounded in the occupied territory by the occupation authorities. Indian troops and police have intensified their search operations and frisking of pedestrians and motorists. The Srinagar city, particularly the areas around Bakhshi Stadium, the venue of the main official function, are under siege as the troops have strengthened their vigil by occupying all high-rise buildings. Surveillance cameras have also been installed around the Bakhshi Stadium.

The APHC, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and the JKLF-Rajbagh in their separate statements in Srinagar, today, expressed serious concern over the inconvenience and distress caused to common people on the pretext of so-called security arrangements ahead of the Indian Republic Day.

Freedom struggle bases on Accession to Pakistan

All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference [AJK MC] Central Secretary Information, Fida Hussein Kiani Tuesday made it clear that Kashmir freedom movement was based on the ideology of Accession to Pakistan.

"Even founder of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah termed Kashmir as "jugular vein" of Pakistan," he was addressing an Iftar dinner hosted in his honour by Muslim Conference's Secretary Information [UK] Syed Hussein Sarwar.

The Iftar dinner was well attended by Sardar Iftikhar Rashid, former mayor councillor of Luton Raja Saleem Khan, Additional general Secretary of MC UK Mohammad Riaz Butt, Khwaja Kabir Hussein and eminent Kashmiri intellectual A H Shaheen and Amir Aksar Khan president MC branch Luton.

'Accession to Pakistan Movement'

Fida said that the destination of Kashmir freedom movement is Accession to Pakistan and no one could force Kashmiris to divert their attention from their long living desires.

"Accession to Pakistan and Kashmir Freedom Movement are sides of same coin and two names of one objective," he added.

Scarifices

Fida said that Kashmiris have rendered enarmous sacrifices for their freedom from Indian clutches and now none of Pakistani leadership has the right to shift their stance on Kashmir issue .

"Kashmiris have given unprecedented sacrifices for freedom and even they expressed their deemed desire through a "Resolution for Accession to Pakistan" in July 1947 before Pakistan came into being," he added.

Kashmir - Jugular Vein

Fida said it is the responsibility of Pakistani leadership to follow the sayings of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah when he termed Kashmir as jugular vein of Pakistan and should not divert from the sayings of Quaid-e-Azam . He held that due to this resolution provides a base for Kashmir issue at United Nations.

UN Resolutions

"The main problem is about plebiscite and even that was a promise made by UN and India when it took the matter at international forum in 1948 but no practical step on that resolution has been taken out yet," Kiyani added.

He slammed Indian occupation of Jammu and Kashmir saying that it has neglected UN resolutions and instead deployed around a million troops in the held valley to oppress Kashmiris' one-voice for seeking their right of self-determination--in line with the UN categorical commitments.

"Time is not very far off when the New Delhi invaders shall have to quit the forcibly held part of the State", he remarked.

Kashmir, often called paradise, is a rich green mountain region North of Pakistan. At the time of independence of Pakistan, all Muslim majority areas were to become part of Pakistan. Kashmir, an 80% Muslim majority region did not become part of Pakistan. Currently, Pakistan administers 1/3 of Kashmir, also know as "Azad (Free) Kashmir." The rest 2/3 under Indian military occupation. There is civil unrest against the occupation of Indian Occupied Kashmir. India is responding with brutal force to crush the civil unrest demanding end of Indian rule. A number of U.N. resolutions have been passed condemning the Indian occupation of 2/3 of Kashmir. As always, the U.N. has not been able to implement its resolution.

The price is being paid by the Kashmiris through their miseries, tortures and brutal deaths as the hands of occupying Indian Army. The extent of torture, killings and rapes perpetrated on Kashmiri people by Indian forces are already creating a new record of atrocities. Gouging of eyes, cutting off of men's genitals, use of ever new methods of torture and endless curfews would shame Hitler's SS death squads. The Indian occupation army's deviltry such as gang-rapes, burning of entire villages and crops, destruction of economic life of whole communities and genocide of the Kashmiri people in defiance of international human rights laws, are everyday affairs.

For the last fifty plus years, Kashmiris have been fighting for independence from India. They are being butchered by over 700,000 Indian occupying soldiers stationed there. Still, Kashmiris have not given up to their oppressors. The UN resolutions on Kashmir have yet to be implemented. Since 1988 alone, Kashmir has sacrificed over 70,000 of its sons and daughters, billions worth of its property and peace of mind of its people at the altar of its national emancipation. The brave Kashmiris have decided to implement the resolutions by themselves and have pledged to stop Indian genocide in Kashmir.

On the 11th Aug 2008, A Kashmiri separatist leader, Shaheed Sheikh Abdul Aziz and seven other protesters were shot dead by Indian troops, as they tried to halt rallies by more than 100,000 Kashmiri's in the region to reach out to their brethren in Pakistan. The marchers had reached a point just 40km from the heavily militarised border, despite repeated efforts by Indian police and paramilitary forces to stop them with tear gas, bullets and batons. More than 300 people are reported to be critically injured on the same day.

Draconian law PSA slapped on Kashmiri leaders

In occupied Kashmir, the puppet authorities once again slapped draconian law, Public Safety Act (PSA) on pro-liberation Kashmiri leaders including Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Ashraf Sehrai and Asiya Andarabi.
Shah was shifted to Srinagar Central Jail from police station Boniyar, Uri. Earlier, PSA was slapped against the senior All Parties Hurriyet Conference (APHC) leader and chairman Democratic Freedom Party for his attempts to unite the pro-liberation leadership. However the draconian law was quashed by the High Court in occupied Kashmir, but police instead of releasing Shah once again arrested him on fake charges of “stoking violence” in the Valley.
Meanwhile, police re-arrested Ashraf Sehrai and Asiya Andrabi after High Court quashed PSAs slapped against them earlier. They have been detained in the Central Jail, Srinagar.

Indian Army officer behind mosque bombing

The startling revelation about a senior Indian Army officer’s involvement in September 2008 bomb blasts at a mosque in Malegoan, Maharashtra state has brought to the fore Indian Army’s apolitical role in country’s communal disturbances.
The sensational disclosure came to light after investigations exposed that one Lt Col Purohit had been supplying the deadly RDX explosive material besides imparting training to the Hindu extremists and terrorists. As the story goes Lt Col Purohit used his links established during his tenure in occupied Jammu and Kashmir for procuring explososives and other weapons where he was posted with 41-Rashtriya Rifles. Lt Col Purohit was involved in training the accused in bomb making and it was on his instructions that funds were made available to those involved in the blast.
Investigations by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) also found that he attended secret meetings of the extremist Hindu group ‘Abhinav Bahart’ in different cities. Around 11 people including serving Lt Colonel Purohit have been taken into custody. The ATS has obtained confessional statements of Lt Col Purohit admitting his pivotal role in plotting and executing the act of terrorism on September 29. The ATS further said that it would like to question at least three more men in uniform believed to be one Major General and two colonels. Investigations further revealed that the accused managed to procure weapons and explosives including RDX using fake documents while he was posted in occupied Kashmir in 2004-05. One Sadhvi Pragya Singh has been declared the mastermind behind the attacks in Malegaon and she was arrested with a retired army major Upadhya with another accomplice S Kulkarni. Upadhaya led the investigations to Lt Col Purohit who is believed to have spilled the beans naming three more top army men. This sinister incident established Indian Army officers hobnobbing with Hindu extremist outfits in the country who have been carrying out bombing, arson, torture and other acts of terrorism against hapless minorities particularly the Muslims. After every bombing strike the blame was conveniently placed on some non-existent Muslim organisation in order to whip up anti-Muslim hatred. Armies everywhere in the world are known to have maintained a strictly professional and secular outlook but the role being played by the army in the neighbourhood defies all descriptions. Kokernag Village Shocked; Govt Orders Usual Probe

Dec 4: Alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl and molestation of a woman by army troopers in this south Kashmir village triggered massive protests on Thursday.
Locals said that a group of troopers from 36 Rashtriya Rifles barged into the house of Muhammad Abdul Khatana, Imam of the local Masjid, last night and gang-raped her daughter.
While narrating the nightmarish experience, Khatana told Greater Kashmir: “I, my wife and three minor kids were sleeping in the kitchen while my son (7), my brother in law, (also my cousin who is putting up with us) and my daughter, Fahmeeda (name changed), the victim, were sleeping in another room.”
He said that around 10:15 pm last night, some people knocked at the door. “As I peeped through the window, I saw six troopers. Out of fear I didn’t open the door. They broke the bolt and barged into the house. First they told me that they have to search the house but when I tried to switch on the light, they reprimanded me. Then I sought their permission to light a candle, but they caught hold of me and nearly lynched me,” he said.
Khatana said that they (troopers) locked him in one of the rooms and his wife and kids in the other room. “They also thrashed my brother-in-law, and locked him in the bathroom,” he said, adding, “After locking all of us they took my daughter Fahmeeda into the other room. Four of the troopers gang-raped her for an hour, while the two others remained outside to guard them.”
Khatana with his eyes moist said that he kept on hearing the screams of her minor daughter helplessly for nearly an hour. “We raised an alarm and few of the villagers heard our screams,” he added.
Locals said that some of the villagers ran towards Khatana’s house after hearing screams. “As the troopers saw people approaching they fled away from the spot,” they said, adding, “As we entered Khatana’s house we found the inmates locked in different rooms. Fahmeeda was lying naked in the room, unconscious with bruises all over her body.”
Locals said that they saw an army vehicle parked a few meters away from the victim’s house. “We approached them and told them that their men have raped a minor, but they denied. The troopers initially told us that they might have been militants, but when we told them that they were wearing the same uniform and carrying the same guns they had, they told us that then it might have been CRPF men,” the locals said.
Haji Mumtaz Ali, an elderly resident said that after the incident troopers approached them and intimidated the villagers to give a statement that troopers from 36-RR were not involved in the act. “We offered resistance and refused to follow their diktats,” Ali said.
After the incident, some of the villagers called the Police Station, Kokernag, and informed them about the incident. “Police reached on the spot and took the victim along,” locals said.
Ruqaya Begum, the mother of the victim was in a shock and was crying continuously.
She didn’t utter a word but pain and agony were palpable on her face.
Locals said that before entering into the house of Khatana, the troopers around 9:00 pm attempted to rape one Rafeeqa (name changed), wife of Muhammad Yaqoob, but the lady offered stiff resistance and they fled away.

Kashmiris to hold anti-polls demos tomorrow

122 Indian troops commit suicide since January 2007
In occupied Kashmir, anti-polls demonstrations, marked with a complete strike, will be held after Juma prayers, tomorrow, call for which has been given by the Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee.

The Committee in a meeting in Srinagar, today, said that the so-called assembly elections were nothing but a military operation as India had converted the occupied territory into a police state. It was reaffirmed that the people of Kashmir would not rest till they achieve their right to self-determination. The meeting was presided over by Mian Abdul Qayoom and attended among others by Yasmeen Raja, Ghulam Nabi Zaki, and Shaikh Ali Mohammad.

On the other hand, the APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq continued to remain under house arrest for the 23rd, Syed Ali Gilani for the 10th and Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi for the 14th consecutive day, today.

A Special Police Officer committed suicide after shooting himself with his service rifle at Gassipora in Qazigund. This has brought the number of such deaths among Indian troops to 122 since January 2007. At least 10 persons were injured and fifteen vehicles damaged when the motorcade of National Conference President, Omar Abdullah was pelted with stones near Narbal on his way to Srinagar.

Undeclared curfew imposed in occupied Kashmir

In occupied Kashmir, the authorities imposed undeclared curfew in Srinagar, Badgam, Baramulla and Islamabad towns to prevent anti-election protest demonstrations after Juma prayers, today.

Defying curfew restrictions people took to streets in Baramulla town raising anti-India and Freedom slogans.

The authorities had placed under house arrest the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Hurriyet leaders including Syed Ali Gilani, Maulana Abbas Ansari, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Fazl Haq Qureshi and Mian Abdul Qayoom. They were not allowed even to offer Juma prayers. Juma congregations in majority of the mosques including historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar could not be held for the third consecutive Juma, today.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement in Srinagar strongly condemned the actions and urged the international community to take notice of the fact that India was not allowing Kashmiris to perform their religious rites.

Meanwhile, Syed Ali Gilani, Mohammad Azam Inqalabi, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl and illegally detained APHC leader, Zafar Akbar Butt in their separate statements strongly denounced the terrorist attacks in Indian city Mumbai describing them as highly detestable.

Indian troops martyr five innocent Kashmiris

In occupied Kashmir, Indian troops in their fresh act of state terrorism, martyred five innocent Kashmiri youth in Bandipore.

The dead bodies of the martyred were recovered from the debris of three residential houses destroyed by heavy mortar shelling of 14-Rashtriya Rifles during siege and search operation at Sheikh Baba in Sumlar area of the district. Two cowsheds were also damaged and more than 30 cattle died during the operation.

Earlier, two troops were killed in an attack in the same area.

APHC invites international fact-finding missions to Kashmir

Srinagar, November 25 (KMS): The All Parties Hurriyet Conference (APHC), has urged the international community to send its fact finding team to Kashmir to take first hand stock of the situation and witness how India is conducting farce elections in occupied Kashmir in presence of lakhs of troops.

The APHC spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar said that a Hurriyet delegation visited Baramulla to express solidarity with the family members of the two youth. “A reign of terror has been let loose by troops on the people of Baramulla and adjoining areas after the recent pro-freedom demonstrations,” he said. He also condemned the use of force on peaceful protesters in Pulwama by Indian troops.

Meanwhile, the High Court Bar Association of occupied Kashmir has expressed serious concern over the human rights violations perpetrated by Indian troops in the occupied territory. The Association in a statement issued in Srinagar strongly condemned Indian troops’ firing, teargas shelling and lathi charge on peaceful demonstrators in Baramulla and Pulwama.

March to Jamia Masjid

Srinagar, November 05 (KMS): The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani have appealed to the people of occupied Kashmir to massively march towards Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, tomorrow, to mark Jammu Martyrs’ day.

Talking to Kashmir Media Service on telephone, the APHC Chairman said that he was placed under house arrest this morning and was not allowed by the occupation authorities to come out of his residence. He said that if the occupation authorities disallowed the march tomorrow it would be held on Friday, the day after.

The APHC Chairman, while congratulating Barack Obama on his victory in the U.S. presidential elections said that it was high time to resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with Kashmiris’ aspirations for ensuring peace and security in South Asia. Illegally detained senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmad Shah in his letter from Srinagar Central Jail addressed to Barack Obama expressed confidence that the new US president would prioritise the Kashmir dispute to get it resolved, once and for all.

The Executive Directors of Kashmir Centres in Washington and London, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai and Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl and the Chairman of JKLF Rajbagh, Farooq Siddiqi in their separate statements also congratulated the US President- elect.

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, in a statement in Srinagar today, deplored that the lawyer of Muhammad Yaseen Malik was not allowed to meet him in Amphala jail in Jammu. The statement expressed concern over the deteriorating health of the detained leader.

Meanwhile, Kashmiris on both sides of the line of control and world over will observe Jammu Martyr’s Day, tomorrow, to renew the pledge that they will not rest till they achieve their right to self-determination. During the first week of November 1947, hundreds of thousands of Kashmiris were massacred by the forces of Maharaja Hari Singh, Indian army and Hindu extremists in different parts of Jammu region while they were migrating to Pakistan.

Srinagar, October 28 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, protest demonstrations, marked with complete strike, continued in Baramulla and Sopore towns today, against the killing of a youth by Indian troops.

The protesters raised high-pitched anti-India and pro-liberation slogans on the occasion. One youth was martyred and several others injured when troops opened fire on peaceful demonstrators on Saturday.

The occupation authorities arrested Hurriyet leaders, Nayeem Ahmed Khan and Dr Ghulam Muhammad Hubbi and shifted them to undisclosed destinations.

The APHC spokesman in a statement in Srinagar and the APHC-AJK in a separate statement in Islamabad strongly condemned the arrest of Hurriyet leaders and activists. Nisar Hussain Rather, the Acting Chairman of the forum patronised by senior Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, in a media interview in Srinagar also took strong exception to the arrests.

Srinagar, October 23 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, Indian police personnel arrested the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Mohammad Yasin Malik and a member of Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee, Maulana Showkat Ahmad Shah from their houses in Srinagar on Thursday and shifted them to unknown destinations.

Mohammad Yasin Malik kick-started the election boycott campaign from Sonawari and urged people to stay away from the polls process. This is the first anti-election campaign by a pro-liberation leader after the announcement of poll schedule by Indian authorities. Hundreds of men, women and children participated in the anti-election rally amidst pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

“The peaceful election boycott by the masses will be the biggest setback to Indian democracy. It will be a victory for us,” Yasin Malik had said while addressing people. He called on them to lodge their protest by observing civil curfew on the scheduled poll dates while staying in their homes and not casting the votes.

The JKLF Chairman asserted that the sacrifices rendered by Kashmiris would be safeguarded at all costs. “We have to sustain the mass uprising and take it to its logical conclusion. It is our responsibility to protect the peaceful uprising that has awakened the US, UN and international community from the deep slumber and compelled them to issue statements on Kashmir situation,” he added.

Yasin Malik maintained that the recent peaceful pro-liberations protest demonstrations have forced even the intellectual class of India to support Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

The JKLF Chairman asked people to reject the pro-India politicians, who will be visiting them and seeking their vote. “The mainstream politicians are more concerned about the power and have been exploiting the sentiments of the people for their petty interests,” he said adding, “They will promise roads, employment and other things but you should make them leave alone and empty handed.”

Terming the so-called elections as a futile exercise, Yasin Malik said that the polls couldn’t be a substitute to Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

Unarmed Kashmiri freedom fighters

Flowing black beard, a headband with “Allahu akbar” (God is great) and a fluttering green flag. This has been the trademark picture of the recent azadi (freedom) processions of Kashmir, where hundreds of thousands marched the streets of this disputed Himalayan region seeking a separation from India.

From a distance, it seems as if the past has returned to Kashmir. But the present contains an irrefutable truth: in place of guns, the people carry slogans. The politics of protest this time is not about the argument of power, but about the power of argument.

Kashmir is the first conflict-ridden Muslim region in the world where people have consciously made a transition from violence to non-violence, and this includes the staunch Islamists too. In fact, the wisdom behind the use of arms to fight a political struggle was being silently debated within Kashmir ever since 9/11 blurred the lines dividing terrorism and genuine political movements. The deteriorating situation inside Pakistan too had tilted the balance towards a peaceful struggle.

Thus when Kashmiris decided to come out to demand azadi recently, there were no militant attacks or suicide bombings. It was through massive unarmed processions where people shouted slogans and waved flags. And when the government tried to halt them, the anger was only manifested through stone pelting. Sensing the overwhelming public mood, the militant groups immediately declared a unilateral ceasefire, admitting the insignificance of the gun for an unarmed people’s movement.

This major shift has not been registered even as it has already formed a new discourse for Kashmir’s separatist struggle. New Delhi’s response was usual – it again used its iron fist, killing 38 unarmed protesters and injuring more than a thousand and enforcing a strict curfew with a hope that the people will be ultimately cowed down. The separatist leadership too was rounded up.

This only shows that New Delhi is misreading the script. This time the authorities are not faced with gun-wielding men but unarmed people. A heavy clampdown keeping the population indoors only puts a temporary lid on the seething anger. Instead of a military intervention, New Delhi should have immediately attempted sincere political and democratic means to engage Kashmir and calm the tempers.

New Delhi’s approach to handling Kashmir for past two decades has been simple and straight: militancy is the only problem and that can be sorted out by stringent military measures. Though there have been several rounds of negotiations with a faction of the separatist leadership too, New Delhi used the process more as a photo-op than a serious effort to address the demands of the people. There have been half a dozen occasions when separatist leadership joined a dialogue with New Delhi to resolve the Kashmir problem amicably – only to find the exercise nothing more than a surrender and thus futile.

The distrust towards New Delhi had reached such proportions that when moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq decided to join talks with New Delhi, his uncle was murdered in Kashmir. Despite a serious threat to his life, he joined the talks directly with the prime minister of India. Again, the non-serious approach of New Delhi derailed the process, further eroding the credibility of talks with New Delhi in the eyes of Kashmiris. The public standing of separatist leaders who had agreed to talk to New Delhi also diminished substantially.

The recent protests by hundreds of thousands of unarmed people too don’t seem to have changed the mindset of New Delhi’s ruling elite. Instead of acknowledging the intensity of the uprising and the depth of the sentiment in Kashmir, New Delhi again refuses to face the reality and delays engaging in a sincere dialogue with the separatist leadership. The Kashmiris have overwhelmingly announced that peaceful processions and not guns are now their favoured means of protest. This needs to be encouraged and allowed to take firm roots because it could help to put an end to the bloodshed in Kashmir and make an amicable resolution of the problem easy. The phenomenon could also have a positive influence over a dozen such violent conflicts in other Muslim regions across the world. But if peaceful protests are crushed like armed movements, another wave of violence will take root, reinforcing the idea that the gun is mightier than a slogan.

Mirwaiz condemns occupation authorities’ actions

Srinagar, October 05 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, strict indefinite curfew was clamped on all the ten districts of Kashmir Valley and Muslim areas of Jammu region today by the occupation authorities, ahead of Lal Chowk March, tomorrow. Call of the march has been given by the Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee, jointly headed by the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Hurriyet leaders’ Professor Abdul Ghani Butt, Maulana Abbas Ansari, Bilal Ghani Lone and Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi were placed under house arrest. Hundreds of innocent civilians including the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Mohammad Yasin Malik, Convenor of the Coordination Committee in three districts of Jammu region, Mohammad Shafi Rangrez and Zaffar Akbar butt were arrested and taken to unknown destinations.

The officials were heard warning people, through loudspeakers fitted onto police vehicles not to come out of their houses and those defying curfew restrictions would be sternly dealt with. The authorities have sealed all roads and lanes leading to the city of Srinagar, deploying huge contingents of Indian troops in all cities and towns of the occupied territory.

Local television channels have been broadcasting only films and music programmes as they were ordered to refrain from airing any news. No media person was allowed to cover the situation. The transporters said that they were threatened of dire consequences by the authorities if they facilitated people in converging on Lal Chowk tomorrow.

The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq talking to Kashmir Media Service strongly denounced the imposition of curfew and large-scale arrest by the puppet administration to prevent Lal Chowk March. He appealed to the international community to take cognisance of the fact that India was not allowing peaceful activities in the occupied territory, which was quite contrary to democratic norms and international covenants. On the other hand, scores of youth defied curfew today in old town of Baramulla staging anti-India and pro-liberation demonstration.

Senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, who complained of severe chest pain, last evening, was shifted to Soura Medical Institute for treatment.

India not to succeed in suppressing Kashmiris’ struggle

Srinagar, October 05 (KMS): The All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has reiterated that the ongoing peaceful liberation struggle will continue till the resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

In a telephonic media interview from his residence in Srinagar Mirwaiz said that detentions and house arrests are part of liberation movement and India cannot suppress Kashmiris’ struggle by resorting to brute force.

APHC Chairman said, “India has intensified atrocities on Kashmiri people and dozens of innocent peaceful marchers including senior APHC leader, Shaikh Abdul Aziz were killed by Indian troops’ indiscriminate firing in last two months.” He added that India should shun its negative approach and use of brutal force and take positive steps towards resolving the dispute.

Mirwaiz said that Kashmiri people held peaceful protest demonstrations and raised the issue on international front. Movement couldn’t be suppressed now as the Indian literate class was also supporting the peaceful solution of this longstanding dispute. He also stressed on the need to include Kashmiri leadership in Pak-India composite dialogue process to work out the solution of the dispute.

Forceful anti-India demonstrations in IHK continue

Srinagar, September 10 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, forceful anti-India demonstrations continued in Islamabad town for the fourth day, today, against the terror unleashed by Indian troops against innocent civilians.

Agitated people took to the streets shouting pro-liberation slogans. They told media men that the troops continue to raid the houses vandalise the household goods and beat up the inmates. A delegation of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front led by Advocate Bashir Ahmad Butt visited the town and condemned the Indian state terrorism. Similar protest demonstrations were held at Hajjan. A fast speedy Indian army vehicle hit a minor girl in Palhallan, critically injuring her. The incident triggered anti-India protests in the area.

The All Parties Hurriyet Conference held a meeting of its Executive Council in Srinagar today, which was presided over by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and was attended among others by Maulana Abbas Ansari, Professor Abdul Ghani Butt, Bilal Ghani Lone, Maulana Abdullah Tari, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Fazl Haq Qureshi and Mukhtar Ahmad Waza.

The APHC leaders said that though Srinagar Muzaffarbad road was as important to Kashmiris for the promotion of their trade and culture as a jugular vein to a human body but Hurriyet wanted to make it clear that its main objective was to ensure a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute. They pointed out that Kashmiris’ travel through Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road must be free of all restrictions. They also demanded the inclusion of Kashmiri leadership in the talks process between India and Pakistan.

Illegally detained APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmad Shah in a massage from Srinagar Central Jail congratulated Aasif Ali Zardari on his holding of office as the President of Pakistan. He hoped that the President would make every effort to bring about a just resolution of Kashmir dispute.

On the other hand, prominent human rights defenders, addressing a seminar in New Delhi, urged India to respect Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and realise that this was the only way forward for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. The speakers included Arundhati Roy, Prem Shankar Jha, Javeed Naqvi, Sanjay Kak, Rajinder Sachar, Gautam Navlakha and Syed Abdul Rahman Gilani.

In Geneva, the Executive Director of Kashmir Institute of International Relations, Sardar Amjad Yousuf addressing the 9th meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council drew world attention towards state terrorism in occupied Kashmir and sought the role of international community to settle the Kashmir issue.

Reporting Nehru's statement on holding plebiscite in Kashmir, The Amrita Bazar Patrika, Calcutta, in its January 2, 1952 issue quoted him saying: As a great nation, we cannot go back on it. We have left the question for final solution to the people of Kashmir and we are determined to abide by their decision.

The drama of so-called accession of Kashmir to India by Maharaja Hari Singh was staged by the Congress leaders in connivance with British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten, who was made the first Governor- General of India by Hindus to over see completion of partition plan to damage Pakistan. The mere fact that no document of accession is available with India or on UN record is proof of a combined plot that was hatched by Hindu leadership with their British well-wisher.

India is continuously harping on the blatant lie that Kashmir is an integral part of India. How has a disputed territory suddenly become part of India when the commitments made by her to allow people of Kashmir to express their choice have not been honoured. No plebiscite has been held. The Kashmiris have not opted to accede to India in any plebiscite. The UN had already ruled in 1951 and again in 1957 that any elected assembly in Indian occupied Kashmir shall have no right to decide the future of the state as to the question of accession to India or Pakistan.

The honourable Prime Minister and other prominent leaders of that 'great nation' had made solid solemn pledges and commitments that people of Kashmir shall be given the right to decide their future. These commitments made by India to the world, Pakistan and the Kashmiris are reproduced from the book, 1 " The Undying Spirit".

CONCLUSION
Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, pursued a policy of deception, a rape of his own pious commitments and remained a perfect disciple of Hindu Political Statecraft i.e. Chanakiya. Dr. Ayyub Thukar makes an interesting comment:

" Sir Owen Dixon was once forced to affirm that, the fellow (Nehru) is lying. Others have said of him that in and out of office, he was fond of riding a high moral horse. He thereby not only threw dust in the eyes of the world, he also succeeded in deceiving himself. He finally arrived like a Humpty Dumpty, at the stage where words did not mean what they connoted, but what he said they meant".

The deception by the prominent successive Indian Leadership has been blasted off for good by the Nuclear Blasts in the sub-continent. The scenario in South Asia has changed. The entire world community now accepts that Kashmir is the root cause of bad blood between India and Pakistan. The carefully worked out strategy by India to put the Issue in the cold forever has failed. Kashmir has come into the limelight, despite all efforts by India to the contrary. It is time that India realises the gravity of the situation and tries honestly to end the sufferings of Kashmiris forever; who are fighting to gain liberty from Indian occupation.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Chairman of its own faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference said the Kashmir freedom movement is heading towards logical end and India can not stop it by force now. Talking to APP on telephone from Srinagar, the veteran Kashmiri leader said the entire Kashmir is up against occupational forces and India has to resolve the Kashmir issue according to wishes of Kashmiris.

To a question, he said the movement of Kashmiris is not sponsored by foreign powers or elements and it is purely indigenous and peaceful.. Million of Kashmiris are on the march on the streets chanting slogans for freedom.

He said India can not ignore the demand to hold plebiscite in

Kashmir as it has promised several times in sixty two years history with

International community and Kashmiris. Holding of plebiscite is the only way to

know the wishes of Kashmiris, he said

To another question as what would be the future of present uprising, he said it is a not a new movement as Kashmiris have been struggling for the last sixty two years to seek right of self-determination. During this long history, he said thousands of Kashmiris either lost their lives or they are untraceable. The recent discovery of hundreds of unknown graves in occupied Kashmir is testimony to the fact that they were tortured to death.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who himself has spent a long period in jail, said Kashmir is a disputed territory and its future is yet to be decided. It is not an integral part of India, as New Delhi is claiming. The delaying tactics on the part of India to address this issue will fail, he added.

When asked about the campaign by Hindu extremists in Jammu region with regards to revocation of Amarnath land transfer order, he said it was unfortunate that Kashmiri Muslims are being targeted there. Condemning economic blockade of the valley by those elements, he said it is an eye opener for the world to see the difference in occupied Kashmir.

He said Kashmiri Muslims are determined to provide protection to all non- Muslims in Kashmir. They want to make Kashmir a land of peace, he said.

He said campaign of Kashmiris is peaceful and militancy has no role in it, he said.

He appealed to the world bodies to put pressure on India to address the Kashmir issue as per wishes of Kashmiris.

Rally to End Indian Rule Over Kashmir

Millions of protesters poured onto the streets of Srinagar Friday. They were waving Pakistani and black flags and shouting slogans such as "Azadi," Urdo for independence. At a massive rally at the prayer grounds, known as Eid Gah, in the center of the city, Kashmiri leaders called for independence from India.

This protest and others earlier this week are the latest in an escalation of tensions in Kashmir Valley. A controversial land deal sparked the first protests, but they quickly ballooned into a renewed independence struggle.

Younis Mir, a 25-year-old Kashmiri, is one of the protesters.

"All people have assembled here in the Eid Gah," he said. "Our main mission is the freedom of Kashmir, nothing else. We are not spreading terrorism. There is no movement of terrorism in Kashmir. It is a freedom struggle, a simple freedom struggle. Freedom from Indian occupation."

Earlier this summer, the Jammu and Kashmir state government transferred about 40 hectares of forested land (nearly 100 acres) to a Hindu shrine board to provide temporary shelters for tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims who visit a cave shrine. Kashmir's Muslims protested the transfer, saying it would lead to permanent Hindu settlements.

The government then rescinded the transfer, triggering violent protests by some of the region's Hindu population. Hindu protesters blocked the only direct road between Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, choking off supplies of food and fuel to the valley.

Hindu protestors cut off Kashmiri fruit growers from markets in New Delhi during the peak of the apple harvest, which usually brings in at least $150 million a year and is Kashmir's biggest cash crop.

Many shops were shut down Friday in anticipation of the protests, which were largely peaceful as Indian army troops stood by behind their razor wire bunkers.

The unrest has paralyzed many businesses in Kashmir Valley, just when the economy was starting to pick up, led by a resurgence of tourism in the picturesque valley tucked in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Mohammed Amin owns a grocery store in Srinagar. He says businesses in Kashmir are bracing for a long period of civil unrest.

"There are no supplies," he said. "That is the main thing. Business is suffering, about 75 percent of it has gone. Tourism is zero now. I do not know how long it will last, but for two months we are suffering."

Indian authorities claim they have opened the road leading out of Kashmir. Trucks loaded with supplies are getting through, but observers say it is only about a fourth of the normal traffic. There are almost daily reports of attacks against truck drivers by Hindu protesters.

At least 350,000 Indian troops patrol Indian-controlled Kashmir, many of them along the line of control between Indian- and Pakistani-controlled areas of Kashmir.

Since 1989, more than 98,000 people have been killed in sporadic violence between Indian troops and Muslims Freedom Fighters. At least 51,000 suspected Muslim militants in Kashmir have disappeared after being arrested by Indian security forces, human rights groups say.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in its entirety and have fought two wars over it since the two nuclear-armed nations split in 1947.

Kashmiris march to UN office

Millions of of Muslims have taken to the streets of Indian Kashmir's main city to demand that the United Nations recognise their right to self-determination.

Security was tight on Monday as a mass of people marched towards a local UN office, in defiance of official warnings against holding the rally in Srinagar, still tense after deadly clashes last week.

The UN office in Srinagar houses personnel who monitor ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, or the de facto border dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

"I have never seen such a big rally in Srinagar," said Abdul Aziz, a 75-year-old shopkeeper who was taking part in the procession.

'Freedom demand'

"I couldn't resist coming out to demand freedom from India," he said, as he marched towards the UN office carrying a placard that read: "If freedom for Kosovo, why not for Kashmir?"

The marchers included men, women and children, who chanted slogans including "We want freedom", "Jeeve Jeeve Pakistan" and "We will give blood for Kashmir's freedom".

Many also carried green or black flags - symbolising Islam and mourning.

Shabir Shah, a senior Kashmiri separatist leader, said the demonstrators planned to deliver a plea for UN intervention in the wake of last week's shootings of "peaceful protesters".

Another separatist, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said the plea urges the UN "to intervene and help us in achieving the right to self-determination".

There are decades-old UN Security Council resolutions calling for a referendum to allow the Kashmiri people to choose between India and Pakistan, but they have never been implemented.

Last week 22 Muslim demonstrators were killed in police firing in the Kashmir valley as they vented their anger over a blockade of the area by Hindu hardliners.

The tensions between Muslims and Hindus centres around a small piece of land in the valley that was awarded to a Hindu pilgrimage trust, sparking Muslim protests.

Showdown

The land transfer order was then rescinded, sparking a blockade by Hindus who dominate the south of Jammu and Kashmir state - from where the main road access to the Muslim-majority Kashmir valley comes.

India stepped up security in Srinagar and warned of a showdown if the rally was held, officials and witnesses said.

Syed Afad-ul-Mujtaba, a local police chief, warned on Sunday that a "huge mobilisation won't be allowed", but failed to convince separatists to call off the march.

Troops have been patrolling streets, erecting barricades and blocking roads leading to the UN offices.

Leaders of Kashmir's main separatist All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference alliance said they wanted to submit a memorandum to the UN office on Monday.

"Call upon India to end its forcible occupation of Jammu and Kashmir and desist from use of brute force against the people of Jammu and Kashmir," the memorandum, published in local newspapers, stated.
